The Warriors entertained Meadow Youth today.
The Warriors were down to the bare bones today no subs and started with purpose winning a free kick that Jamie launched goal wards James beating the centre back in the air and glancing the ball through the keepers legs giving the warriors an early lead. Again the warriors attacked this time Brad turned and smashed another long range effort straight through the keeper and in the back of the net 2 up in minutes. An amazing start against a well drilled outfit. Good work form the midfield keeping possession allowed the ball to fall to Matty who curled an effort but the keeper did well to save. Meadow Youth pulled one back from a header and would you believe it from kick off attacked again and scored. The warriors were shell shocked and the usual suspects started moaning at each other – get over yourselves and start playing as a team. Meadow attacked again Louis made a vital save but was beaten again getting a hand to the ball. Jack leading by example ran through Meadow youth beating player after player smashing a wicked low cross that Matty finished smartly bringing the scores level.
From the restart Andy blew for half time.
Half Time AFC Woodham Warriors 3 Meadow Youth 3
The second half started with both teams looking to attack and an excellent covering tackle by Matty and cleared up well by Tommy. Meadow gave up attacking down the middle and targeted the full backs Ben & Louie. Adam and Luke both helping out on the flanks and attacking where possible. Meadow got another giving them a slender lead. Louis pulled off a blinding save nearly heading in the rebound before pouncing on the ball. Some slick passing by James and Jamie found Brad winning a corner. Brad delivered well almost going in but the keeper somehow flapped the ball out and Adams effort was blocked. You couldn’t’ fault the effort as AFC looked to get a point from the game pushing Jack up and it nearly worked getting an effort but over for a conversion. Further long range efforts from Jamie Matty and Ben but Meadow were defending well and attacking with pace keeping the defence on their toes. It wasn’t to be with Meadow picking up the points in an entertaining game.

The Warriors playing at Meadowbank today against Valley Green Eagles.
The boys started well taking the game to Valley, winning a corner in the first minute. Brad Reid floated an excellent ball for captain Jamie to firmly head the ball in the far corner what a start for the warriors. The boys looked composed on the ball with Jack sitting in the front of the back three of Ben Tommy and Louie. Valley hit a long ball only for Louis to come rushing off his line and prevent any danger. Tommy smashed a long range effort which the keeper saved at the second attempt. Matty F was winning the balls in the middle and sending some precise passes through to Brad. A triangle of passes from Brad Adam and Matty found Jamie striking from outside the box just wide of the post. The attacking play at times was vintage AFC something we haven’t seen too much this season. The warriors dominating play won a freekick with Jamie smashed in the wall but chipped the rebound towards Matty but it was just an inch to high for him to connect. Valley were in trouble and just before half time Matty again sent a screamer of a pass to Adam , the keeper saved but Jack smashed home the rebound . A great half for the warriors.
HT AFC Woodham Warriors 2 Valley Green Eagles 0
From kick off Valley pushed forward and got the perfect start by scoring from the restart. The boys were battling hard now that Valley had come back into the game Tommy went on a terrific run bringing the ball out of defence. As the rain was getting harder Valley hit the post and really put the warriors under pressure. Luis on for Ben, Luis went up front with Luke slotting into right back after his hard work on the right flank. Louie and Adam linked up well with James flicking the ball onto Luis but the keeper reacted to the danger. Another great ball from Matty looking for Jamie but again the keeper made the save. The defence were slow to push up and played the striker onside who found the bottom corner levelling the scores. The pressure was starting to take its toll on some of the boys and it took a top class save from Louis pushing the ball from a freekick with his fingertips onto the bar to keep the boys in the game. The boys were digging in and gave it everything battling to get something out of the game another cracking header by Jamie at the back kept Valley out. Injured Jamie replaced by Ben. The last five minutes was a battle and in the end a draw was a fair result after dominating the first half we let Valley back in the game but credit to the boys for hanging in and getting a point.

Warriors Battle at the Meadow:
Match Report 18th April 2010-04-19
Meadow Youth 2 – 0 AFC Woodham Warriors
On a gloriously sunny Spring morning, with not a cloud nor a plane in the sky (the planes having been grounded due to Volcanic Ash in the atmosphere), these two first division teams squared up to what would be a gruelling match, due not only to the heat but also the size of the enormous pitch.
Meadow Youth enjoyed most of the early possession, and with barely 5 minutes on the clock they broke through the Warriors’ defence and hit a rasping shot towards the top corner of Woodham’s goal, which Spud (Louis Grisedale) somehow, at full stretch managed to reach and parry around the post for a corner.
Soon after this first excellent save, Spud was called into action again, and this time he produced an even better stop, somehow managing to push the ball over the bar from a low driven goal bound effort, a save reminiscent of Gordon Banks’‘Save of the Century’ against Pele all those years ago.
Woodham were battling well but were never really in control of the ball for any length of time due to fast the pace of the game. Perhaps this game was showing the Warrior boys how quickly at this level they must ‘get it under’, as Lee W. is often heard shouting from the touchlines.
More pressure from Meadow Youth saw Spud race from his line and punch the ball clear of the danger zone, and then again not a minute later Spud came from his line to hurl himself at the feet of the onrushing attacker, thus thwarting yet another offensive move by the home team.
Woodham’s only real attack in this half came right at the end, and after a good passing move it was Matty Fenton who was found, well positioned on the penalty spot and with time for a left foot shot at goal. However by the time Matty had tried to shift the ball onto his right foot, the defence were onto him and had snuffled out the danger. This highlighted the need for all players to be able to play (or at least kick) with both feet…maybe something to be worked on in the closed season?
After the well deserved half time break the pattern of play continued in the same vein, however with 5 minutes of the half gone an incredible, unsaveable (and a rather speculative…or lucky) lob by a Meadow Youth midfielder from quite a way outside the area finally broke the deadlock.
This was followed by yet more pressure which saw Adam having to head a ferocious cross clear of the goal, and then Jack also heading the ball out of the danger zone.
Woodham once again managed to piece together a neat and crisp passing move, which resulted in a great chance for Brad to equalise, however somehow the ground was hit harder than the ball and, with the dry conditions, Brad momentarily disappeared in a cloud of dust (though this particular dust cloud shouldn’t effect the European airspace too much)!! The ball trickled into the goalies grateful hands.
Meadow Youth mustered up one last attack, and with a larger squad than AFC, their substitution rotation policy meant that they were now looking much fresher than the bedraggled, exhausted, reserve-less Warriors, and a second goal came for the home team courtesy of a neat header via a crisp, curling cross.
No AFC member could complain at the final 2-0 result, which was a fair reflection of the match. The Warrior boys battled hard, but in vain. The lessons to take home for these brave young Warrior men were that they do need to ‘get it under (control)’ faster to be able to have time to utilise possession, and that all players should be able to kick a ball with both feet, once again to maximise the limited time this league allows players to play ‘the beautiful game’.

The Warriors were away today against Braintree Town.
Jamie won the toss and swapped ends attacking down the ski slope for the first half.
The boys started well taking the game to Braintree. A long freekick from Jamie was flicked on by James and Matty read the ball well hitting it first time but over the bar. Braintree had their moments with Louie doing very well clearing off the line. Brad getting amongst the strong defence and looking to get Luis through on goal. It was clearly going to be a tough game with Captain Jamie struggling with an injury, Matty and Tom won some vital tackles and getting the ball out to Adam who was attacking well down the flank. The warriors looked more likely to score at this point really pushing for a goal but a deflected effort fell to town’s striker who lifted the ball over Louis.
The Warriors went on the rampage winning a corner expertly taken by Brad falling to Luis but somehow it was cleared off the line. Another long free kick by Jamie and Matty had another chance connecting well but just wide of the post. AFC were dominating the game now with Matty and Luis causing trouble finding Brad who drove the ball across goal but no one could get a touch on it. James was getting roughed up in the middle of the park but still managed some perfect passes to his team mates. Louis made an important stop and gathered the ball his dropkicks easily clearing the half way line. Jamie had to come off just before half time in pain and it didn’t look good.
HT Braintree Town 1 AFC Woodham Warriors 0
Jamie couldn’t continue so for boys were down to ten with no subs it was going to be tough now that Braintree had the advantage of the slope. Some good defending by Luke playing centre back today linking up well with Tommy kept Braintree out but as quick as the ball was cleared Braintree knocked it back in and finished well. Louie and Ben were tackling well keeping the pacy wingers at bay. Adam and Matty tracking back helping out in defence. A great save by Louis pushing it on the bar but a neat finish put them 3 up. It was all about Character now and the boys countered winning a free kick after another physical challenge. Brad sent in a powerful strike which the keeper fumbled and Luke made no mistake giving the boys a well deserved goal. A lot of battling and hard work kept the score down. Louis making some vital saves and all the defence made some last ditch tackles deflecting the balls wide a real team effort just before the final whistle a wicked ball across the goal mouth was finished well.

Well battled boys considering the poor pitch (an embarrassment to Braintree Town football) and having no subs and Jamies injury. I think you can pat yourselves on the back as first half we really gave them a game and didn’t deserve to be a goal down. Second was as Brad said about character and you did the club proud. Well done.

The Warriors had another tough game lined up against the top of the table Torquespeed Thunder.
Chris and Tony got the boys together for a Winston Churchill inspired talk to get the Warriors on the highway to hell. It was going to be an all action game with boys straight in with the tackles. Jamie leading the troops winning the ball in the middle of the park and playing it out wide looking to Adam and Brad in the game. Louie looking solid in the left back role getting forward to join the attacks. Torquespeed countered after some slick passing involving Matty and Jack and Louis made a very brave save at the feet of the striker. A decent ball through to Brad after good work from the Jamie, Brad was unlucky with the keeper saving, Matty got to the rebound but over the bar. Jack made a very good interception to prevent a shot on goal. The warriors were playing exceptionally well really battling for each other and with Louis quickly off his line making another good save smothering the ball.
Adam was using his full range of tricks getting past the full back and sending James on his way but with the Pitch playing like an Augusta green James just couldn’t get to it before it went out of play.
Ben having his best game of the season looked up for the battle delivering some crunching tackles.
AFC attacked again and a well floated ball by Brad found the captain who smashed an overhead kick on to the top of the world cup netting. Louis was called into action again saving with his legs and cleared by Tommy.AFC went straight up the other end and a great ball from Jamie was flicked on by James into the path of Brad ho made no mistake smashing the ball home sending the home support into a conga. Some great tackling all over the park kept the warriors in front and then after a pile up in the warriors penalty area a penalty was given which was scored after a retake. A crushing blow for the boys but Jamie and James combined after good work from Ben and Luke allowed Matty space but his shot was well saved. Louis made an important save to keep the scores level.
HT AFC Woodham Warriors 1 Torquespeed Thunder 1
From the kick off the warriors got straight amongst them with Luke getting his foot in followed by Ben the league leaders knew they were in for one of their hardest games this season, Jack roamed forward spotting Adam in space who was looking lively on the wing. James was pulling the strings getting Brad in a good striking position only for the defender to beat him to it.
Jamie and Matty working well in the middle of the pitch, Tommy winning some big headers.
The pace was starting to catch up with both teams so a change was made enter the livewire Luis replacing Brad. Straight away Luis fed James but a strong challenge stopped the attack. Louis again making an important save after a long kick fell in the area. The boys were attacking well with the play staying on the left hand side with the thunders full back struggling giving the warriors a series of corners. AFC got caught on the break and conceded a corner from the cross it was half cleared and the striker placed the ball well into the far corner giving Louis no chance. A gutting blow for the home side that have really excelled playing some lovely passing moves and not just hitting it over the top.
Brad came on for hardworking Adam.
The tackles kept flying in with the team determined to get something out of the game. Louis made another couple of Brave saves. In the last minutes the warriors pushed forward with Captain Jamie turning and firing just wide form long distance after being picked out by Matty. Just couldn’t break through with the game ending 2-1.

The Warriors entertained high flying Heybridge today at a sun covered Meadowbank.
The boys new this was going to be a tough game and set about Heybridge from the off not giving them anytime on the ball closing down and forcing them back. Jack sitting in front of the new look three man defence of Ben Tommy and Louie. The midfield of Adam, Brad, Matty and Luis kept busy passing the ball around with accuracy to warming applause from the home faithful.
The warriors committing bodies forward were hit on the counter attack and a flashing drive struck AFC cross bar a warning of what heybridges game was to be. James and Jamie were working well up front riding the tackles and winning a corner. Brad stepped up and expertly delivered the ball Matty F glancing it just wide. After another strong tackle from Ben Afc broke Brad found James on to Jamie and the skipper was unlucky to see his effort saved. Talk about a kick in the dry roasted as we looked to score Heybridge broke hitting a long ball behind the defence for their very quick forward to finish past Louis.
The warriors carried on and Jack looked like he was enjoying his role breaking up play looking to Adam and James into the play more. The boys were battling well with Jack Louie and Ben battling well, Tommy sweeping up and loose ends. Matty and Brad exchanged some neat passes only for Heybridge to break and hit a long range effort past Louis. The boys looked gutted and Louis pulled off a great double save but just before halftime we conceded another.
HT AFC Woodham Warriors Heybridge Youth Pumas 3
The boys started the half on the front foot with Matty and Jack having efforts saved by the keeper. The midfield boosted by Jack was battling well matching Heybridge for tackles. Good work from defence got the ball up to James who sent a heat seeker of a pass into the path of Jamie who held of the covering defender striking the ball well but just over the bar. Jack tracked back making a saving tackles well cleared by Tommy. Heybridge kept the ball in AFC’s danger area and a soft goal was conceded.
It was a tough goal to concede as the boys had played well and really didn’t deserve to be trailing by 4 goals. The midfield kept to their job hassling the opposition and Adam found Luis in space linking up with James well. Luis made another good save low to his left. The boys started to tire and the visitors took full advantage dominating the last 15 minutes and scored another two goals which seemed harsh on the boys.

The Warriors entertained Gallow Utd today after yesterday’s battle with Heybridge.
The boys kicked off and looked to take the game to Gallow with Adam turning and hitting a dipping shot saved by the keeper in the first minute. Good work from Jamie winning a corner, Brads delivery was met by a cheeky Adam back heel well dug out by the keeper. An impressive start with James and Jamie taking the attack to Gallow, Brad had an effort saved and then from a long drop kick from Louis a flick on found Jamie holding off the defender and finishing well past the keeper. The defence of Dan,Tommy,Jack and Louie didn’t really have much to do but when called upon kept it tidy at the back. Adam and Brad were involved in a top passing move finding Jamie striking the ball hard but saved for a corner. The warriors without hitting top gear were dominating play with James and Matty having efforts saved by the impressive Gallows Keeper. Matty from a tight angle hit a cross (I’m sure he will tell you he meant it!) deceived everyone and floated in the far corner giving the warriors a two goal cushion. Gallow couldn’t get into the game and the warriors looked likely to extend the lead with Matty hitting a long range effort just wide. Influential captain Jamie carrying an injury to his ankle had to come off allowing Luis to get involved.
HT AFC Woodham Warriors 2 Gallow United 0
Start of the half and what a start by gallow cutting past the defender and a top draw finish in the far corner gave Louis no chance putting Gallow back in the game, an unexpected start to the half. The boys wobbled with the defence coming under more pressure the passing of the first half and gone out the window with the ball seeming to be out of play for throw ins most of the time. Gallow looked a different side with the warriors going back into their shells. Gallow attacked and it wasn’t long before they got the equaliser. After a decent counter attack Luke got a shot away just wide of the left hand upright. It looked like that some of the lads were tiring and finding the going a bit tough.
Ben replaced Dan at right back and looked to inject some hostility and effort on the pitch.
The warriors started to edge back in the game and Matty went on a run after good work from James looking up releasing Adam who struck the ball well, just wide. Another effort after good work from Luis was blocked and Gallow survived clearing the ball splitting the defence and only a fine last ditch tackle by Jack prevented the strike on goal. Louis hadn’t much to do this game except picking the ball out of the back of world cup style net. The game finished with a point each.

Heybridge Swifts Pumas 4 – 0 AFC Woodham Warriors
Report By “SHAVEN DAVEN REAN”
Result from Scraley Road
Heybridge Youth 4 – 0 AFC Woodham Warriors
A good football match, with both teams taking confidence building 'positives' from the game. Heybridge continue to push on with their title challenge, three more points secured along with a clean sheet to help in the goal difference department, Woodham taking pride in a solid, all round, vastly improved performance in comparison to the first (League Cup) meeting with 'The Basin Boys' back at the beginning of the season.
Today's Woodham though are a totally different proposition to the team slaughtered seven (could've been umpteen) nil here not 6 months ago. In fact the game was still very much in the balance up until the second half of the second half, when the home side finally pulled too far clear at three nil to effectively clinch the win and wrap up the points. Up until that point Woodham had battled and fought, and for certain periods of the match outplayed Heybridge, who somehow managed to hold firm in defence throughout, however not without a quite a few scares, albeit none of the attacking forays tested the keeper. The one clear cut attacking breakthrough was adjudged to be offside...a questionable decision to say the least (one of a few made by the man in black, according to the disgruntled away day supporters).
Indeed it could have been a different story had the visitors (at two nil down at the end of the first period) capitalised on their early second half possession and attacking play. For a not inconsiderable amount of time, the thronging and surging away masses really did think that their proteges could score that all important first goal, which in turn would alter the whole complexion of this tie.
However today it wasn't to be. Alas there were no points here today for The Warriors, and to be honest when travelling here this morning, if they were honest with themselves they couldn't have expected too many!! But the way in which the Woodham lads performed must make them confident that they will notch up quite a few more points in the run in to the end of the season, and that as a team they have come on leaps and bounds, and will no doubt continue to steadily improve and seriously test the top teams whenever they meet them.

Today the warriors entertain Wilvale Rangers.
After last weekend’s victory the crowd gathered for what would be a tough game against a well organised Wilvale team with no Tommy today Jamie dropped back to play centre back. It was an encouraging start from the warriors with the boys looking to get forward, Matty straight away was threading some great passing together looking for the early runs from James and Brad. Wilvale were pushed back, Warriors continued to look for a break through Adam cutting in and linking up with James. Matty hit a long pass expertly won by birthday boy Luis and knocked on for Brad hitting the shot with power smashing against the inside of the post and in the back of the net.
The defence of Ben,Jack,Jamie and Louie were containing the Wilvale attacks well, Louie tackling was well timed and also managing to get forward and link up with Adam. The warriors were in control Luke carrying on from last week looked in fine form. Matty went on a mazy run round three players passed to James hitting the shot just wide. Wilvale gradually starting to get back in the game tested Louis from long range, Louis palmed the ball over the bar. A counter attack left the AFC defence flat footed straight through the middle, Jack managed to get a tackle in but somehow the ball ended up flying in the bottom of the corner.
HT AFC Woodham Warriors 1 Wilvale Rangers 1
Second half under way, Wilvale started the half stronger, Jack and Jamie making some well timed tackles. The game was getting a bit scrappy, with the ball out of play a lot breaking up the flow of the game. Louis was called into action saving a lobbed effort. James embarked on a run and managed to stab a shot away but the keeper held well. Wilvale looked like they were more likely to score but the defence were holding firm with Luke helping out when needed. The warriors managed to get on the attack and win a corner, Brad sending in a fine ball, Matty striking wide. A draw looked like it was on the cards with both teams cancelling each other out but Wilvale got through and only a brave save by Louis and good covering be Ben prevented the ball from going over the line. Finally the warriors can get back on the hallowed Meadowbank turf after a long lay off. today playing Maldon Greens seeing the return of former player and club sponsor Joe & Jeff Satwick.
From the kick off the boys looked to pass it around and get the ball forward to put pressure on maldons defence. The midfield were closing down gaining possession of any loose balls and looking to get James away through the middle. The warriors upped the tempo and good build up play found Matty Fenton who hit a superb cross for Adam Rean volleying the ball home to a massive roar from the home support.
Maldon came back strongly and a cross ball struck a Warriors hand, Steve pointed to the spot and the striker blasted past Louis making it 1-1. The boys heads dropped after such a good start and when captain Jamie went off Luis came on looking to inject some havoc into the local derby. The boys battled well with Luke having an impressive game on the right hand side of midfield. The defence of Ben,Louie, Jack & Tommy held up well for Half time.

The boys got the half underway showing some attacking intent with Brad sending a cross just out of the reach of James. Good work from Louie and Adam allowed Matty space hitting the ball from distance against the bar with the keeper not reacting quick enough to the rebound Luke did the job following up and giving the warriors a deserved lead.
Maldon put pressure on the defence and eventually got a free kick decision on teh edge of the area a great save by Louis pushed the ball onto the bar but somehow maldon managed to nick it in, level scores again. Luke replaced Ben at rightback, the tempo of the game was up a notch with both teams battling hard the warriors looked like they were getting the upper hand with Brad coming into the game more. The defence looked a bit patchy today rushing the play and getting caught with the ball at times.
Matty found James stabbing the ball just wide and again another great ball from midfield found James through on goal but before he could get a shot away he had his shirt tugged. Jamie took the free kick but straight at the keeper. A long throw by Brad onto Matty laid back for Jamie but just wide of the upright. Maldon hitting on the break had a couple of good chances but the line was held well by Jack and Tommy resulting in the striker being offside. After last week’s battling Victory the crowd were looking forward to back to back victories for the first time this season. The warriors attacking up the slope first half, from kick off the boys were pushed back by a good wilvale side but the defence of Louie,Tommy,Jack and Ben tackled and fought well. Wilvale were playing to their strengths putting the balls out wide but strong tackles from Ben and Louie pegged them back. Jamie was having a very good game playing deep clearing up the loose ball. Adam Matty and James were battling well but weren’t getting a lot of time on the ball leaving Brad and Luis to chase the long ball. Brad had a decent effort blocked after good work from the midfield but Wilvale quickly countered and Louis made a brave save at the strikers feet to keep the scores even. Adam was getting more of the ball twisting and turning on the left flank but Wilvale marshalled their defence well. The boys were down slope this half and after not really testing their keeper you had a feeling they could nick a goal and win this. Jamie gained possession and thread through a scorcher of a ball to Brad who struck it well hitting the bar. The boys looked a lot more lively although the final ball didn’t seem to find a team mate today. Another AFC attack cleared and Wilvale countered winning a freekick pushing 5 attackers up with the midfield still wandering back the toe punt came in and the extra attacker worked for wilvale finishing low 1-0.

Jack was having a vital performance at the back reading the game well and delivering his usual strong tackles. Brad hit another one wide after good work by the captain. After last week’s battling effort the Warriors lined up away at Valley Green Eagles today.
In freezing conditions the game started with the boys getting hold of the ball with Matty linking up with Luis who found Brad hitting on target but saved by the keeper. A strong start and another attack and the defender fell into James giving the ref no option but to point to the spot. Jamie hit it over the keeper giving the warriors a perfect start 0-1.
Mr Fentons passing was sublime today picking out Brad and the Luis for further chances, a handball right on the edge of the area allowed Jamie to perfectly strike the ball over the wall in the top left corner perfectly weighted a great goal Jamie. 0-2.
Valley Green hit back, the back four of Dan.Louie,Tommy and Jack were holding firm with some strong tackles by Jack breaking down the play. Louie and Dan were playing some lovely balls down the line. Luis got on the end of one but saved, a counter attack right through the middle allowed Valley to get what looked like a certain goal but Louis through himself palming the ball one handed out for a corner.
The passing was of a high standard considering the state of the pitch and all the boys were battling well coming in at half time.
HT: Valley Green Eagles 0 - 2 AFC Woodham Warriors
Start of the second half and the boys commenced battle with the game staying in the middle of the park for long periods. Adam not getting much of the ball but covered a lot of ground both defending and attacking. Ben on for Luis, Valley were getting more possession and the ball was hanging around dangerously in AFC’s area and after some pinball, valley just about managed to get the ball past Louis 1-2. Valley upped their game but great work between Matty and Jack allowed Brad through who lifted his shot over the keeper sending the away support into a hot chocolate infused frenzy 1-3.
The warriors still had to be on their guard with Ben and Tommy putting in some well timed tackles. The boys countered Valleys advance and again Matty found James making it look easy beating the keeper at the near post putting the smile back on his face 1-4. Valley got their second when the defence were expecting the whistle to go and the ball was tapped over the line 2-4. The warriors continued to battle in tough conditions and Louis had a fine game in goal making a couple more assured saves. Luis back on for Brad hustling the defenders not giving them time on the ball. All the boys gave everything in a great result for the club.
It has taken time for the boys to settle down, but judging by the last 2 performances, the Warriors are now looking sharp and ready to make an impression in the division.

Due to the fine efforts of Chris, Mike and Brad the game got the go ahead after a late Sat pitch inspection. The warriors had looked in good nick in training and now up against a very strong Braintree Town side were set to get under way for the first time in six weeks.
Straight away from the kick off the boys closed Braintree down looking to break up play and get the ball out wide. Unable to get out of our own half we soaked up the pressure well but got hit in defence with a mistimed tackle, Spud palmed the ball away with a smart save but the striker followed up giving the opposition the lead 0-1.
Matty F was linking up well with James looking to get the ball forward and although we got in some good positions we couldn’t test the keeper with Braintree playing a high line. The defence of Luke,Tommy,Jack & Ben looked solid with notably Jamie and Adam covering when required. You could see the boys really put a shift in this half battling for every ball and Braintree knew they had a game on their hands.
HT AFC Woodham Warriors 0-1 Braintree Town
Start of the second half and the boys soaked up some pressure and countering with Luis looking lively and Brad trying to break the defence down.
Louie on for Ben, Braintree won a corner and a neat flick on gave Louis no chance 0-2 you could sense that was a big moment in the game but the boys hit back strongly with Louie looking comfortable getting forward and Luke doing the same on the right flank linking up with Adam.
Jacks tackling was impressive today, Louis pulled off a great diving save at the strikers feet pushing put for a corner. After great build up play Brad was unable to get past the keeper with the best opportunity for the warriors. Luis broke free but shot wide. The earlier effort seemed to take its toll and Braintree became more dominant nicking another goal at the death 0-3.

The warriors were away at tiptree today to face high flying Torquespeed Thunder, after a pitch inspection the game kicked off with the warriors trying to get hold of the ball. Torquespeed dominated but the makeshift defence held firm. The boys were finding the going tough not really troubling thunder a shot from a corner was deflected with Louis getting a palm to it but unable to keep it out. Louis made two fine saves from distance before Torquespeed gained two further quick goals splitting the defence. Adam had a decent shot saved just before half time. The start of the second half and the boys showed a pit more passion and determination in a physical game. Another effort went in via a deflection, but the warriors hit back immediately with Jamie smashing a long range past the keeper. The warriors were starting to get stuck in and a long pass by Ben found Matty Fenton who did very well lobbing the keeper after his first effort was blocked. Straight from the kick off the warriors conceded making it 5-2 but a very good build up play from the midfield allowed James Wilsher to send in a screamer 5-3, The warriors continued to fight but Torquespeeds strengths/fouling started to dominate and although the warriors were playing for pride with a few of the lads carrying illness and knocks the final score flattered Torquespeed 8-3.

The warriors were really turning the screw on Gallow with James finding Brad but his effort was blocked .Gallow were hitting us on the break but found Jack in top form. Almost playing like a sweeper covering both sides of the pitch and even breaking forward at times. Louis had a smoother second half with only a couple of regulation saves to make. Braintree were pressing pushing the boys back and again Louis had to be alert making a diving save across the goal. Some tidy defending from Luke and Jamie prevented another chance.
Jack and Tommy at the back were in for a busy day with braintrees front line looking very dangerous on the break and also at shirt pulling. Ben slotting in at left back today looked comfortable. Jamie and Matty were breaking up play as best as they could getting the ball onto James and Brad but with the game being played in the middle of the park Joe and Adam received very little of the ball.
A clearance up field by Ben allowed James to flick onto to Brad, laying off a lovely ball for Matty Fenton who drove from distance, the ball sliding under the keeper giving the warriors an unexpected lead against the run of play.
GOAL! AFC Woodham Warriors 1 Braintree Town 0 Matty Fenton
This sparked Braintree to life cutting through the defence and unleashing a powerful shot across the goal a superb save by Louis with his feet kept town at bay. Again Braintree attacked slicing through the middle of the park the striker unleashed an unstoppable drive planted straight on the crossbar pinging back out and defended to safety.

No slick AFC passing today this was more of a battle trying to keep possession proved difficult. Adam getting into the game a bit more was battling but both Adam and Joe having to get inside to get the ball.
James was getting closed down and unable to dictate in the middle of the park. Matty making some good runs linking up well with Brad who was battling away up front when ever called upon.
Jamie was doing his usual winning the ball but playing very deep helping the defence out. Braintree broke again this time the striker found the space between Luke and Jack and smashed a fantastic strike that swerved in the air high past Louis giving the keeper no chance.

James and Brad linked up well after a good ball from Joe, Brad having his shot saved. Some big headed clearances by Jack and Luke stemmed the flow with the pace of Tommy and Jack proving a thorn in the side of Braintree. As the warriors looked to up the tempo Braintree again attacked wide and cut in beating a despairing Louis who managed to get a hand to it but it trickled over the line.

The game bogged down a bit with the warriors struggling to clear the lines Braintrees deadly number 11 unleashed a fabulous effort smashing off the bar. The boys never gave up battling with the defence knowing they have been tested today but Braintree got what they deserved 3 points today until the next time.

A tough opening game today but with new additions and 11 aside on the big pitch its going to take a couple of games to get back to the level we were playing at last season. A great game from spud pulling off some great saves for his teammates.

The AFC Warriors headed out to Bocking for the invitational event at rocking Bocking with Good Friends Vipers Youth hosting. The other two teams involved New Latchingdon pythons and Valley Green Eagles.
Brad Harrop managed the warriors today assisted by goalkeeping coach Tong Grisedale. A strong squad available: Louis Grisdale , Ben Grimwood, Jack Blenkarn, Thomas Whitelock, Luke Harrop, Jamie Cox (Capt), Matthew Fenton, James Wilsher, Joe Satwick, Adam Rean, Luis Cooke, Brad Reade.
The boys were up first against Valley Green Eagles and AFC started strongly spraying passing across the well maintained pitch. Valley struggled to get near the ball with the midfield breaking and looking to get the ball wide to Joe and Adam. Brad and Jamie were causing valley problems and from a satwick corner the warriors had several chances to score but somehow valley blocked every opportunity. Ben Jack and Tommy looked strong and composed at the back clearing well and looking to start the AFC attacks. At half time we should have really been out of site probably 3-0 would have been fair but the boys came in at 0-0 for a quick chat with changes seeing Luke Matty and Luis coming on.

Start of the second half and the boys looked flat conceding a corner which was well placed in the AFC area Luke got his head on but couldn’t prevent it from hitting the back of the net a fortunate goal for Valley giving them the lead.
Goal AFC Woodham Warriors 0 Valley Green Eagles 1
The warriors tried to get back in the game with Jamie and James getting Matty in the play more but a shot from Valley outside the area which usually would be a routine for AFC’s Number 1 keeper Louis but bounced in front and deceived him giving Valley an increased lead.

They say football is a funny old game and it can’t be argued with from the 1st half where we had dominated we quickly were put on the back foot and losing the game 2-0.

A lot of positives from the game for Brad and a few lessons for the boys if you don’t convert your chances then this is what happens.
